Interstellar Video Project 11/29
From watching "Interstellar" I was prompted to think about the fate of Earth and the future of humanity as time slips away. "Interstellar" warns mankind about the nature of our actions impacting our environment and consequently the habitability of our planet. Based on science, "Interstellar" is alarming accurate and the probability of having to flee our world in search of another is highly possible. For our video project, we explored this idea based on our fields of study. I, being a communication major, used my experience critically analyzing medias and making connections to form the introduction to our video based on "Interstellar" and the science fiction genre in general. I took note of how the "end of the world" was represented on camera and how the plot within a two hour film reflects the potentiality of our harsh reality. I discusses the selfishness of human nature and how our reckless actions put us into the position we are in today, the year 2022. Our actions have consequences and from the damage we've inflicted environmentally and socially, we put ourselves in an irreversible situation, ultimately leading to our inevitable demise. We chose the year 2090, over 50 years in the future, in an attempt to change our fate and, hopefully, improve the circumstances of 2022.
"Hello, I’m sending this message from the year 2090. Abbie Karson and I agreed to enter cryotherapy to change the world from a futuristic approach. When we were frozen in 2022, we realized that the path humanity selfishly chose to take was the exact road that would eventually lead to our inevitable demise. Through our screenings of science fiction films based on statistical, factual research, we noticed a pattern amongst the themes across these mediums. The damage mankind inflicted upon our environment through the structures we built both physically and mentally was the secret recipe to disaster. Socially, our society collapsed into itself with the overstimulation and exhaustion of the once average everyday routine, escalated by the rapid advancement of technology. The over-usage of inventions created to “benefit” mankind actually formed a relationship beyond interpersonal connections that caused humanity to completely and utterly rely on technology, such as artificial intelligence. What was once virtually undetectable, in reality, was killing us little by little everyday. Perpetuating, allowing, and subconsciously condoning the damage to continue and worsen until it was too late. We came to conscious decision to deem the then “current situation” in 2022 as irreversible. We saw no possible solution to save the world as we knew it or even flee this world we once cherished. Cryotherapy was the only option we saw to ensure our survival. The decision was made out of pure virtue and curiosity. We were longing to see how the last population chose to deal with the foreseen circumstances of our actions and let nature take its course. We wanted to ensure that our discoveries, united through our well-rounded education across the board, from biology to literature, would not go unnoticed and therefore insignificant. "
